AMANDA HOLLOWELL: 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:52.000 Hi, thank you so much for this. 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:58.000 I am going to try through 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:02.000 to go through couple slides. I'm Amanda Hollowell, and the manager 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:07.000 director of When We All Vote. I oversee four of her foam -- programs, 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:11.000 our Haskell program for 9th to 12th graders, our partnership 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:13.000 program or have merit and partnership opportunities, 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:17.000 support distributive volunteer campaign and I also help with our party 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:23.000 are polls, which I will talk about. I will share my screen, 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:30.000 I cannot share my screen at the time. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:33.000 SPEAKER: You can try it out, it should work. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:36.000 AMANDA HOLLOWELL: Spiritus. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:43.000 -- There it is. 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:46.000 This is getting involved with When We All Vote. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.000 This was created in 2018 by our 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:55.000 former First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:07:00.000 Our edict is returned to change the culture around loaded and increase 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:02.000 voter participation, 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:04.000 in fight against voter suppression. 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.000 We try to give ways 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:12.000 to get involved in many different ways. We use National Voter 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000 Registration Day as our catalyst 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:18.000 to really work through a National Voter Registration Day week, and 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.000 we did a national trading without 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:21.000 training 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:25.000 -- with over 2000 people on how to engage with this 00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:28.000 . 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:33.000 This is the 17th, and we got feedback from the volunteers, because they are 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:38.000 volunteers and working for free, they would've more time to host the event so 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:41.000 we extend the celebration for the whole week. 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:47.000 We ask people to register voters with us, and then we ask people to take this 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:52.000 energy, excitement they have at the call, and go back to the community. We 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:56.000 provide a full step-by-step guide that has all of our voter registration 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.000 resources. We only do digital registration, not 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:02.000 paper, but we provide QR code, tools, recorded trainings and printable 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.000 flyers. We emailed this out to everybody who 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:10.000 attends our trainings after the calls. We also offer free volunteer merge kit. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.000 Once the person registers there loading -- 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:14.000 , 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.000 we send about 100 peoples -- pieces, 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:26.000 placards, buttons, and we get a free T-shirt for hosting the event. 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:33.000 We ask them to sign up and post our events on the mobile 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:39.000 web, and we list them as the upcoming events we have and to make sure people 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:44.000 see the events and can attend. This helps us track who is working and 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:48.000 out in the community and where, and helps the event host send 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:51.000 back-and-forth messages to the attendees. From the promoting of the 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:57.000 event, we teach them how to share their unique event like, how to send it via 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:02.000 email and text and social media, and also ask them to snap photos and tag 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:07.000 When We All Vote, which will amplify and share on our socials as well. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:12.000 We got this new tool just for national voter registration, building your 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.000 voting squad, which is a personalized voting registration portal where people 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:21.000 can use it for themselves and they will get the link with their name. This is 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:22.000 the street 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:28.000 -- three step process that is easy, we will go to we all thought vote/voting – 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:35.000 squad, register through the email, 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:40.000 and then go to the personalized portal you can send out to your friends that 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:45.000 will do a challenge or compete and have them check or register to vote. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:51.000 This is what it looks like. This is on the website. This is what 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:55.000 the page they come to, and they would fillet the information on the form. 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.000 They can actually see themselves on the volunteer board. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:03.000 Once we did this training we talked about the opportunities moving forward. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:06.000 Not just about National Voter Registration Day, 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:11.000 there's a bunch of opportunities coming up. When we love is the party at 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:14.000 the polls program. You can also just 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:03.000 make sure you're taking advantage of the resources that are available and 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:07.000 sharing the posters digitally, or around the offices that you have access 00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:10.000 to. I'm going to share my screen and as 00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:39.000 part of this I'm going to share about other civic holidays 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:43.000 that are celebrating, other opportunities after the exciting work 00:17:43.000 --> 00:17:47.000 you will see on, early September, from National Voter Registration Day. 00:17:47.000 --> 00:18:04.000 Give me one moment. 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:07.000 There are other 00:18:07.000 --> 00:18:12.000 holidays that were follows national voter education we, 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:17.000 vote early and election here a day. Each of these days build on the others, 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:22.000 so as people registered it gives him a chance to get into the system 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:25.000 them 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:30.000 a chance to get into the system, learning about a sample ballot and to 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:34.000 engage in the work. We want people to cast a ballot, 00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:35.000 critical piece of the mystery 00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:40.000 deaf democracy that allows people to share their voice and a final day of 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.000 celebration for the people that make this work possible. 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:50.000 Celebrating and what you like and in a way that you like, 00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:54.000 individual to your community. From ideas 42, people 00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:40.000 overestimate the difficulty of the education process, insecure but the 00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:45.000 level of political knowledge they have, don't think concrete lay about the 00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:49.000 voting process and may not know, 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:53.000 and like the political participation and the everyday experiences that they 00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:56.000 have. But they know, the trusted people in 00:19:56.000 --> 00:20:01.000 the community like each and every one of you, that is on the call today, can 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:06.000 be a helpful way to ensure there is change, or they can expense changing 00:20:06.000 --> 00:20:09.000 Create Change Fellowship the five --,. 00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:13.000 After this week, the five main calls to action, registered to vote, get 00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:17.000 another ballot, make ablative vote, understand the voting process and share 00:20:17.000 --> 00:20:21.000 that with friend and family. By the process of talking and 00:20:21.000 --> 00:20:26.000 communicate with each other's, this grows and becomes a bigger movement. I 00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:28.000 want to share about Vote Early Day, 00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:32.000 my organization that we are excited about. Love to see you guys 00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:09.000 represented for the election hero. 00:25:09.000 --> 00:25:12.000 Stay connection with us. Next slide, please. 00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:42.000 Just want to share for all of us at the civic holidays, the policies 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:45.000 -- the possibilities are endless. National voter education 00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:50.000 week, national 00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:57.000 election here are day, we are thinking for you. 00:25:57.000 --> 00:26:10.000 You know your community best to it it's our job to uplift your work. 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:15.000 BILLY CERULLO: Thank you to all the panelists today. Before go to the Q&A I 00:26:15.000 --> 00:26:20.000 want to remind everybody of the opportunity to sign up as a civic 00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:25.000 holiday partner and encourage others in your network to do this as well. We'll 00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:31.000 put the link to that in the chapter so you can sign up. I noticed we have some 00:26:31.000 --> 00:26:36.000 questions in the chat. And some in the Q&A. If you have a 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:41.000 burning question, please post it, it's easiest if you post in the Q&A as 00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:46.000 opposed to the chat. Just so I can track and make sure every 00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:50.000 question is answered. The first one that I see here, which it 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:54.000 can go to anybody. I live in an area where approximately 00:26:54.000 --> 00:26:59.000 72% of my community are registered voters. The biggest issue we face is 00:26:59.000 --> 00:27:00.000 low voter turnout. 00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:09.000 We are open to ideas, suggestions, to increase voter turnout. Please help. 00:27:09.000 --> 00:27:13.000 Any of you have suggestions, specifically on turnout. We are talking 00:27:13.000 --> 00:27:18.000 about registration a lot, but on the topic of turnout, is there a connection 00:27:18.000 --> 00:27:23.000 between the registration and the actual turnout to the polls. What are your 00:27:23.000 --> 00:27:26.000 thoughts on that? BRYCE BENNETT: Happy to jump in on 00:27:26.000 --> 00:27:35.000 that, vote early day, we are eager to bridge the get -- gap 00:27:35.000 --> 00:27:39.000 between getting people to register and getting the return of. We encourage 00:27:39.000 --> 00:27:45.000 your friends and family to sign up to vote by mail, we know that when people 00:27:45.000 --> 00:27:49.000 vote by mail is one of the most profound ways that we can increase 00:27:49.000 --> 00:27:53.000 voter turnout. You know that while 70% of the American 00:27:53.000 --> 00:27:57.000 population is currently registered to vote, only about 50% of people actually 00:27:57.000 --> 00:28:01.000 turn out. When people are signed up to vote by 00:28:01.000 --> 00:28:06.000 mail they turn out at a very high level. Also doing the work through 00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:10.000 celebrations like ours, parties at the polls, posting events in your community 00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:15.000 to make this fun and exciting and engaging for folks. For so many folks 00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:19.000 out there, it feels offputting, or scary, or trepidation is with the 00:28:19.000 --> 00:28:23.000 nature of politics being as nasty and critical as it sometimes can be. 00:28:23.000 --> 00:28:28.000 Anything we can do in our communities to lower the barrier for entry to 00:28:28.000 --> 00:28:33.000 democracy goes a long way to ensuring that more people ask -- actually cast 00:28:33.000 --> 00:28:36.000 their ballots. BILLY CERULLO: Think you so much. 00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:38.000 I notice 00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:45.000 d 00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:49.000 (unknown name) posted two questions I'm going to combine them. The first 00:28:49.000 --> 00:28:53.000 part of the two-parter, can homeless people participate? Can they vote? 00:28:53.000 --> 00:29:02.000 Second part, can anyone vote who has been incarcerated? 00:29:02.000 --> 00:29:06.000 BRYCE BENNETT: I am happy to throw my two cents here, 00:29:06.000 --> 00:29:13.000 but happy to pass it on to other folks as well. 00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:16.000 The questionable folks who are experiencing homelessness, can they 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:20.000 register to vote? In almost every state across the nation, 00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:26.000 that I'm aware of, the answer is yes. There just has to be one place they 00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:31.000 designate as the place they're going to register to vote for them. If that is a 00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:35.000 shelter, they can researcher affect register, or from they are staying 00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:36.000 with. There's 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:41.000 County Clerk's office that will give you the best option for your city, 00:29:41.000 --> 00:29:44.000 county, state. There are different rules when it comes 00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:50.000 to people who have experienced, the criminal justice system. 00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:55.000 about what they're able to do in their state. You're gonna have to look up 00:29:55.000 --> 00:29:57.000 your state-by-state rules on that 00:29:57.000 --> 00:30:01.000 front, because while some states, as soon as you leave incarceration, you 00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:06.000 are able to register and vote again, some you have to go through a process 00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:09.000 to get your rights back. Some, unfortunately, 00:30:09.000 --> 00:30:19.000 are not able to get the rights back after they come out of the cursor ration 00:30:19.000 --> 00:30:21.000 -- incarceration. It's a state-by-state situation. AMANDA 00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:25.000 HOLLOWELL: To add to that the folks are expressing -- expensing 00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:26.000 -- experiencing houselessness 00:30:26.000 --> 00:30:29.000 and reentry, most 00:30:29.000 --> 00:30:31.000 common issue is ID. 00:30:31.000 --> 00:30:33.000 We use a partner and everybody 00:30:33.000 --> 00:30:35.000 on the call 00:30:35.000 --> 00:30:41.000 called vote writers, they are 00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:46.000 amazed at getting voter IDs and explaining the laws state by state by 00:30:46.000 --> 00:30:48.000 state. On their website, it is called vote 00:30:48.000 --> 00:31:00.000 ridrs.org. 00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:05.000 This can break down the process of needing ID to vote. BILLY CERULLO: 00:31:05.000 --> 00:31:08.000 Thank you both. Another question that is important, 00:31:08.000 --> 00:31:10.000 been a study posted this= -- 00:31:10.000 --> 00:31:16.000 any tactics for voting suppression tactics? Voting ballots 00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:21.000 We don't have mail in voting you have to have a good reason. Everybody has to 00:31:21.000 --> 00:31:26.000 vote in person and this impacts water deaf voter turnout. Any advice for 00:31:26.000 --> 00:31:34.000 voter suppression tactics around the country? 00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:39.000 I know it looks different state to state. AMANDA HOLLOWELL: And happy to 00:31:39.000 --> 00:31:44.000 step in here because I live in Georgia which is the crown jewel of voter 00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:48.000 suppression tactics in the voting process. More than anything, get 00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:52.000 educated about your state guidelines are. There are a lot of organizations 00:31:52.000 --> 00:31:57.000 who are working on the ground, sharing this information about this, about what 00:31:57.000 --> 00:32:00.000 voter suppression looks like. More than anything, there's an 00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:06.000 organization called, that uses a phone number you should use, one – 866 – OUR 00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:09.000 - VOTE. Which is an election protection help 00:32:09.000 --> 00:32:10.000 Holland. -- 00:32:10.000 --> 00:32:13.000 hotline. 00:32:13.000 --> 00:32:22.000 Say they sent you a provisional voter, 00:32:22.000 --> 00:32:27.000 and they will give you answers about what voter suppression looks like in 00:32:27.000 --> 00:32:32.000 your state and how to present – I predict yourself as a voter in your 00:32:32.000 --> 00:32:33.000 state. 00:32:33.000 --> 00:32:37.000 Increased enthusiasm of what is happening around the country. There may 00:32:37.000 --> 00:32:43.000 be an uptick of people showing up to the polls, the ballots are good to be 00:32:43.000 --> 00:32:46.000 very long this year. Please encourage the folks you're 00:32:46.000 --> 00:32:51.000 talking to in the community to look at the ballot beforehand, and make a plan 00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:54.000 to vote. Transportation is when to be a 00:32:54.000 --> 00:32:56.000 challenge. Where the early voting locations might 00:32:56.000 --> 00:33:01.000 be, will probably be some challenges as well as where voting locations will be 00:33:01.000 --> 00:33:05.000 on the day. Also there will be some very amendment 00:33:05.000 --> 00:33:10.000 days are Constitution based in very not accessible language, as well as way too 00:33:10.000 --> 00:33:12.000 many candidates. 00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:16.000 Please encourage people to read this information beforehand maybe even set 00:33:16.000 --> 00:33:20.000 up a forum or discussion moment or community meeting to get people 00:33:20.000 --> 00:33:24.000 educated about what could be potentially on the ballot this year. 00:33:24.000 --> 00:33:25.000 ROHINI NAMBIAR: I 00:33:25.000 --> 00:33:30.000 also want to jump in and share, Amanda, everything you said, right on 00:33:30.000 --> 00:33:31.000 point, as always. 00:33:31.000 --> 00:33:35.000 We work with a partner, civic holidays, election here he 00:33:35.000 --> 00:33:40.000 oro days, 00:33:40.000 --> 00:33:45.000 pizza to the pole. I will drop the link in the chat, if 00:33:45.000 --> 00:33:50.000 you have to stand in a long way, and feeling the people around you are 00:33:50.000 --> 00:33:54.000 leaving, dropping off, you can contact pizza to the polls, 00:33:54.000 --> 00:34:00.000 and they will work to send pizza. Know that that is a resource to get 00:34:00.000 --> 00:34:03.000 people to stay in line, and waited out. 00:34:03.000 --> 00:34:07.000 BILLY CERULLO: 00:34:07.000 --> 00:34:19.000 Another question that I think it asked a lot of, and it's important about 00:34:19.000 --> 00:34:23.000 with the political climate being what it is, folks procure and particularly 00:34:23.000 --> 00:34:29.000 disengage, or not wanting to be engaged in voting or the politics as it is 00:34:29.000 --> 00:34:32.000 right now. What advice you have and this question 00:34:32.000 --> 00:34:37.000 in the chat asking this, what advice do you have to engage, in particular, 00:34:37.000 --> 00:34:41.000 young people in this process? 00:34:41.000 --> 00:34:48.000 CHYANN SAPP: I can jump in, I used to work with youth voters in New York City 00:34:48.000 --> 00:34:53.000 and they are an interesting group, I will tell you that, and honest group. 00:34:53.000 --> 00:34:58.000 What they are most engaged around, when you make the issues more personal to 00:34:58.000 --> 00:35:01.000 them. If you take a big issue, or a big role 00:35:01.000 --> 00:35:06.000 like the president, and drill it down into local, more local examples, like 00:35:06.000 --> 00:35:11.000 city Council, may be Atty. Gen., etc. Then you start to help them 00:35:11.000 --> 00:35:15.000 connect what their issues are, in their communities, to what election officials 00:35:15.000 --> 00:35:18.000 oversee. That is where you see the interest start 00:35:18.000 --> 00:35:21.000 to build and had to take into consideration 00:35:21.000 --> 00:35:26.000 that youth are not having these conversations in school, or even at home 00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:29.000 . Many times, their parents are not 00:35:29.000 --> 00:35:30.000 voters, or they are 00:35:30.000 --> 00:35:37.000 of voter that comes out every four years. 00:35:37.000 --> 00:35:41.000 They may be not as engaged in the community. Take that into 00:35:41.000 --> 00:35:45.000 consideration, and maybe start from a very small granular example and build 00:35:45.000 --> 00:35:48.000 it up. There's also the talking point that 00:35:48.000 --> 00:35:53.000 there's about 80,000 positions on the ballot this year. It is much larger 00:35:53.000 --> 00:35:56.000 than just presidential. We are voting down ballot 00:35:56.000 --> 00:36:00.000 and those positions that you are talking he/them about, especially as it 00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:05.000 relates to issues within the community, 00:36:05.000 --> 00:36:10.000 so encourage them to think larger but have the issues connected the election 00:36:10.000 --> 00:36:14.000 official positions to open up the conversation. 00:36:14.000 --> 00:36:16.000 BILLY CERULLO: Amanda. And then Bryce, afterwards 00:36:16.000 --> 00:36:19.000 /. 00:36:19.000 --> 00:36:24.000 AMANDA HOLLOWELL: We find with the Haskell program when we talk to the 00:36:24.000 --> 00:36:31.000 students about, 00:36:31.000 --> 00:36:36.000 biggest issue for a lot of people be transportation. A lot of citizens who 00:36:36.000 --> 00:36:40.000 don't have families actively engaged in the democracy process, how are they 00:36:40.000 --> 00:36:45.000 going to leave school to vote? How do they get to the polls? Today 00:36:45.000 --> 00:36:49.000 vote after school? All of us work with lifted line, which 00:36:49.000 --> 00:36:53.000 worked to get codes and students need them the most. 00:36:53.000 --> 00:36:58.000 With the high school program we funded some school districts to buy or vent 00:36:58.000 --> 00:37:03.000 buses to take larger massive tunes to go vote during early voting 00:37:03.000 --> 00:37:13.000 or on election days. Men also do not vote shame young voters. 00:37:13.000 --> 00:37:21.000 People die for it, and use the way we got the vote 00:37:21.000 --> 00:37:26.000 as a way to shame them. It's not easy, semi-babysitters and how 00:37:26.000 --> 00:37:30.000 do you take off from the job. We had with the noncommunity -- 00:37:30.000 --> 00:37:34.000 nontraditional student, at community college. 00:37:34.000 --> 00:37:37.000 What are the hours of the polling stations? 00:37:37.000 --> 00:37:41.000 What are the barriers that the young people have to vote, 00:37:41.000 --> 00:37:46.000 ? 00:37:46.000 --> 00:37:50.000 I know right to share has been an amazing organization bringing people 00:37:50.000 --> 00:37:53.000 into offer volunteer, so they basically it's like 00:37:53.000 --> 00:37:58.000 Uber for voting but there will be a lot of codes that will be shared out 00:37:58.000 --> 00:38:00.000 for the universe as well. 00:38:00.000 --> 00:38:05.000 Try to think about what is stopping them from voting, instead of what 00:38:05.000 --> 00:38:08.000 is often said, you are to vote. 00:38:08.000 --> 00:38:13.000 BRYCE BENNETT: There's a study come out a few years ago that I would love 00:38:13.000 --> 00:38:19.000 to cite in questions like this, for the Afghan people who had not cast a ballot, 00:38:19.000 --> 00:38:26.000 what were the reasons why they had not. 00:38:26.000 --> 00:38:31.000 One of them, something Amanda touched on well is people said they did not 00:38:31.000 --> 00:38:33.000 have. -- how. Often for first-time voting 00:38:33.000 --> 00:38:42.000 that is a real barrier. 00:38:42.000 --> 00:38:48.000 Those that have been voted for a long time have been entrenched in the system 00:38:48.000 --> 00:38:53.000 of democracy, and wonder, how could you not know how? It's a simple process. 00:38:53.000 --> 00:38:58.000 For first-time voters is a challenge. The second one that caught me off guard 00:38:58.000 --> 00:39:03.000 and continues to is them saying that no one ever asked me to. I think that 00:39:03.000 --> 00:39:08.000 really speaks to the shared community impact that will have defined time to 00:39:08.000 --> 00:39:13.000 do, expressing not only the importance of it but expressing that this is 00:39:13.000 --> 00:39:17.000 something that you, as somebody who is entrenched and experienced and 00:39:17.000 --> 00:39:23.000 connected to this community, is asking them to do and be part of so that they, 00:39:23.000 --> 00:39:28.000 too, can be part of this global democracy that we are all a part of. 00:39:28.000 --> 00:39:33.000 BILLY CERULLO: Thank you all very much. I want to circle back something 00:39:33.000 --> 00:39:38.000 you were saying, Chyann, and it connect to a question that was posted the Q&A 00:39:38.000 --> 00:39:43.000 and one that was kind of similar in the chat. We were talking about 00:39:43.000 --> 00:39:46.000 particular stances on policy, and also ballot items. 00:39:46.000 --> 00:39:50.000 Where can folks find information about where candidates stand on particular 00:39:50.000 --> 00:39:54.000 issues? 00:39:54.000 --> 00:39:58.000 In the context of our space here, I think specifically when talking about 00:39:58.000 --> 00:40:02.000 housing, but also just in general, what advice do you have 00:40:02.000 --> 00:40:06.000 for the folks in this room, but also in their networks, 00:40:06.000 --> 00:40:11.000 making sure that they know where to go to find this information? 00:40:11.000 --> 00:40:16.000 CHYANN SAPP: That's a great question. This information is hard to find, 00:40:16.000 --> 00:40:20.000 which is something that we should be communicating and be transparent about 00:40:20.000 --> 00:40:24.000 when we speak to voters. There are guides that are created, 00:40:24.000 --> 00:40:29.000 city by city or state by state, but accountability is a big piece here. 00:40:29.000 --> 00:40:32.000 Whenat can an astronomy be different 00:40:32.000 --> 00:40:38.000 on what they are looking on and what they do in office. If guides are not 00:40:38.000 --> 00:40:42.000 available, locally, I would say the best advice for engaged 00:40:42.000 --> 00:40:47.000 constituents or constituents who want to be engaged no more to go out to 00:40:47.000 --> 00:40:48.000 speak to these candidates, 00:40:48.000 --> 00:40:54.000 to find out not only who is running for office but where they're speaking, 00:40:54.000 --> 00:40:58.000 what types of communities are they speaking to, and ask them those 00:40:58.000 --> 00:41:02.000 questions there, to get a better understanding of where they stand on 00:41:02.000 --> 00:41:05.000 these key issues. I did used to do at 00:41:05.000 --> 00:41:11.000 voting guide in New York City, and it was very difficult to get candidates to 00:41:11.000 --> 00:41:15.000 put answers on paper. If that is what you are running up 00:41:15.000 --> 00:41:20.000 against, and you'd want the answers, go ask them in person. It's definitely my 00:41:20.000 --> 00:41:23.000 best advice. AMANDA HOLLOWELL: Go-ahead. There is a 00:41:23.000 --> 00:41:26.000 lot of services, too, like ballot ready.org, 00:41:26.000 --> 00:41:31.000 for your email, and they do the easiest and most operative way of 00:41:31.000 --> 00:41:33.000 really getting people the way of 00:41:33.000 --> 00:41:37.000 what the candidates say. What I like about this site is a 00:41:37.000 --> 00:41:41.000 explain the position, and it's so important. I love pellet 00:41:41.000 --> 00:41:42.000 --ballotpedia. 00:41:42.000 --> 00:41:48.000 It's not 00:41:48.000 --> 00:41:52.000 accessible, but it does a great job of breaking down and bringing it to 00:41:52.000 --> 00:41:57.000 normalized, so people understand what they are about to vote for. BILLY 00:41:57.000 --> 00:42:00.000 CERULLO: I do want to note, thank you Roh, 00:42:00.000 --> 00:42:05.000 can you put the link in the chat so thank you for doing that. 00:42:05.000 --> 00:42:13.000 I see a question going back to engaging young or younger folks, 00:42:13.000 --> 00:42:19.000 and I think on the topic of obstacles, that might be in the way and in this 00:42:19.000 --> 00:42:24.000 case may be unique obstacles, what should those students that are away at 00:42:24.000 --> 00:42:27.000 college do to make sure they are able to vote? 00:42:27.000 --> 00:42:33.000 BRYCE BENNETT: I used to do a lot of organizing on college campuses and we 00:42:33.000 --> 00:42:37.000 would do big voter registration drives and it's about a conversation with them 00:42:37.000 --> 00:42:42.000 about where they want to make this decision at. Both of them are valid 00:42:42.000 --> 00:42:45.000 decisions. And fortunately, a lot of folks out 00:42:45.000 --> 00:42:50.000 there that want to spew a lot of misinformation but the fact that 00:42:50.000 --> 00:42:53.000 college student can't vote in one 00:42:53.000 --> 00:42:58.000 place or another, but the truth is because the college experience is going 00:42:58.000 --> 00:43:04.000 to be so much of your life, and you're good to be there for a long amount of 00:43:04.000 --> 00:43:09.000 time, except for a few states with particular residency issues, in almost 00:43:09.000 --> 00:43:14.000 every place you can decide to register at the college where your learning and 00:43:14.000 --> 00:43:18.000 growing as a student, or register and request an absentee ballot for the 00:43:18.000 --> 00:43:23.000 place I call home, back in my home state or home community. Either way, 00:43:23.000 --> 00:43:27.000 making sure that you are registered and up-to-date with your 00:43:27.000 --> 00:43:32.000 information if you're registered at a location where you're not going to get 00:43:32.000 --> 00:43:37.000 the ballot, in October, in November, or September, for those of us in places 00:43:37.000 --> 00:43:41.000 like North Carolina, who start with the early voting process later this week. 00:43:41.000 --> 00:43:47.000 Make sure that your absentee ballot is well set up so you can get that ballot 00:43:47.000 --> 00:43:52.000 to you, and back with amount of time. CHYANN SAPP: I would add to that, 00:43:52.000 --> 00:43:57.000 to piggyback on the point I was making earlier, you should not assume that 00:43:57.000 --> 00:44:02.000 college students know where they want to vote, or where it matters more. That 00:44:02.000 --> 00:44:07.000 may be a conversation you should be prepared to have with them because 00:44:07.000 --> 00:44:12.000 sometimes they may not know how to answer the question are to live in a 00:44:12.000 --> 00:44:16.000 battleground state, or what a battleground state is, let's assume 00:44:16.000 --> 00:44:20.000 that Civics is not been introduced everybody and prepare, like Bryce said, 00:44:20.000 --> 00:44:25.000 to go into the conversation with a little bit more knowledge of how to 00:44:25.000 --> 00:44:29.000 approach them. BRYCE BENNETT: To add quickly, I see 00:44:29.000 --> 00:44:32.000 something the chat, asking about overseas voters.
