If 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:05.000 -- we focus on the voter ID aspect of the voting process, 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:11.000 2012 if you could go to the next slide? 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:16.000 Even though there are 38/50 states that have voter ID laws and we work and 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:22.000 although states and we do have staff on the ground in the states that you see 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:26.000 here if you are actually in the states 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:33.000 on the ground and we are happy to work with you. But if you are not in the 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:38.000 states we can still work with you, during COVID-19 we were able to provide 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:41.000 some resources for partner organizations and still provide the 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:47.000 same services and assistance as we have in the past. If you do not see your 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:53.000 state here does not mean we do not work here it means we may not have a person 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:58.000 on the ground but we may have some really good anchor organizations and 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:02.000 volunteer groups that help us with the assistance. Again I've mentioned here 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:08.000 there are 38/50 states that have a voter ID law and the ones that you see 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:13.000 in the orange color, you can see that there are new 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:17.000 restrictive laws since the last presidential election, 17 votes 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:21.000 have changed so 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:27.000 what worked last time may not work this time around so we know there are a 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:33.000 lot of people affected by this so it is why not only are we creating awareness 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:37.000 and educating people but we are actually helping them get underlying 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.000 documents like the birth certificate for state identification. 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:46.000 We do it because of voting but it's a holistic approach because sometimes you 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.000 need employment for housing and other benefits. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:51.000 Now before we talk about some resources I 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:54.000 wanted to share some findings we did 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:58.000 in a research project we did with the University of Maryland 00:07:58.000 --> 00:08:02.000 and the Center for Justice in 2023. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:08.000 Before this there were some statistics out there but not necessarily some 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:12.000 that were particular to voter ID and the impact it has on communities 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:19.000 . The big thing we had was about 15% 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:23.000 do not have an unexpired driver's license with their current name and 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:24.000 address on it. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:28.000 Using a 2020 census number that transit to over 34.5 million people. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:29.000 It's going 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:32.000 18 and over for 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:35.000 US citizens. Next slide? 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:41.000 There's a disproportionate impact 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:45.000 , right? The people most impacted by these laws 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:49.000 and the people least likely to have these are black Latinos individuals 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.000 who do not have these 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:54.000 credentials are a high school degree and 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:59.000 individuals with lower annual incomes. 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:04.000 One thing I want to highlight is black individuals from 18 to 29 are the ones 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:11.000 least likely to have acceptable ID. When asked, 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:15.000 70% said that they did have a drivers license or did receive identification 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:16.000 but out of 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:22.000 those 70% almost have said that they did not have their current name or 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:27.000 address on it so it is not up to date so in some states 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:32.000 they would not be able to use them unfortunately. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:38.000 We also did ask about, OK people don't have it why? 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:43.000 What are the reasons? Almost 1/5 of individuals 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:48.000 without a license or state ID said it was a bureaucratic or economic factor. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:51.000 They cannot pay, did not have documentation, 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:52.000 financial or 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:58.000 legal difficulties or they didn't have the time 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:02.000 or can get all the documents needed. Next? 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:11.000 In addition to that two out of every 10 Americans living 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:14.000 (indiscernible), 38 states have a voter ID law 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:20.000 but about 30% of the people living in the states do not have 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:24.000 … I apologize, an acceptable identification to vote. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:30.000 It is not just having the right documentation it is also not knowing. 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:36.000 We asked about if people knew that there was a voter ID law in their state 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:39.000 and almost half of the people in the states 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:46.000 or you do require a voter ID, they did not know if they had a voter ID law. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:47.000 We saw this 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:52.000 even with individuals in states that did not have a voter ID law, 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:58.000 they were still confused and did not know if they had to provide one or not. 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:01.000 So it is just opening our eyes and having empirical data 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:05.000 behind what we are doing that unfortunately people not affected by 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:07.000 these laws are still 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:12.000 affected, it is spilling over because there's so much talk about it and it 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:16.000 creates even more confusion. Now that I've given you some background 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:20.000 on voter ID and what it is looking like… I 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:25.000 watched you know we are looking to do some samples in specific states so we 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:28.000 could actually have state specific numbers. It's 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:29.000 part of a national representative 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:38.000 sample and it gives you an idea they need out there that 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:43.000 is in the communities but now that I've talked about this I'll talk about 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:47.000 what we can do with the resources we provide for individuals and 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:52.000 organizations that are interested in this. The first thing we have is our 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:56.000 voter ID state info pages. You have a 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:01.000 specific pay for all 50 states including DC whether there is an ID law 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:06.000 or not because we still get questions. This is great for you to bookmark 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:12.000 because we update this in real time so not only is our priority that we use 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:16.000 simple language where we can go for a goal and say 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:22.000 oh I do or don't need an idea but we also updated in real time. I pride 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:27.000 myself because it has been a couple instances of different states where we 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:31.000 have partners who say your page says something different from the secretary 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:36.000 of state and it turns out that the Secretary of State's pages actually 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:41.000 outdated, and we are more up to date. So this is a great resource, you go to 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:45.000 both writers.org/your state name and go from there. Next? Excited again 00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:53.000 to have this conversation 00:22:53.000 --> 00:22:59.000 and we can go to the next slide. 00:22:59.000 --> 00:23:02.000 I want to share more about myself actually, 00:23:02.000 --> 00:23:04.000 as someone who grew up a 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:07.000 Medicaid recipient 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:12.000 it really paints the picture of this link between voting and health 00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:14.000 so picture this, I am 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:17.000 a 12-year-old student who has recently entered 00:23:17.000 --> 00:23:21.000 seventh grade and I have a single mother who 00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:24.000 is already struggling to make ends meet. 00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:25.000 And 00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:28.000 they are now worried about finding a way to get 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:31.000 orthodontic services. 00:23:31.000 --> 00:23:36.000 In my sneering specifically because of the area I was in there were no 00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:39.000 readily accessible clinics or dental offices that could provide 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:41.000 these services and also 00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:44.000 accept my Medicaid benefits 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:49.000 and as a result my mom wound up finding a clinic over two hours away 00:23:49.000 --> 00:23:51.000 in South Florida. 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:57.000 Meanwhile, I thought I was sick was good because I got to skip school for 00:23:57.000 --> 00:24:01.000 half a day, go get my braces treatment and come back and 00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:05.000 spend the rest of the day at home missing more class. 00:24:05.000 --> 00:24:08.000 In hindsight it is obviously not the best situation 00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:11.000 , I would've wanted to be in. 00:24:11.000 --> 00:24:16.000 It would've been prefer that I had treatments right there 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:20.000 and ultimately I think it just goes to show how important 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:25.000 that we have policies 00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:28.000 to hopefully support 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:31.000 communities like the one I came from. 00:24:31.000 --> 00:24:34.000 From low income communities and ultimately 00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:36.000 it is up to community members 00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:40.000 and organizations 00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:44.000 like you to help folks get out there and register to vote 00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:46.000 and show up to vote. 00:24:46.000 --> 00:24:48.000 I'd 00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:50.000 now like to paint some of the 00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:52.000 research that shows this 00:24:52.000 --> 00:24:55.000 connection. 00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:58.000 This comes from one of our amazing partners that 00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:59.000 the 00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:01.000 healthy democracy, healthy people. 00:25:01.000 --> 00:25:04.000 This shows the relationship on a 00:25:04.000 --> 00:25:07.000 national level between states with 00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:09.000 a certain level of voting access and 00:25:09.000 --> 00:25:10.000 what their 00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:13.000 health 00:25:13.000 --> 00:25:17.000 outcomes are looking like. If you look at what this relationship is 00:25:17.000 --> 00:25:24.000 you see there is a positive relationship 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:28.000 and if there is more voting axis typically receive better voting 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:33.000 outcomes and if there's less voting access we see were of health outcomes. 00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:38.000 This goes upside down -- so we notice how hard it is for people to 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:40.000 vote particularly in these communities. 00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:45.000 So we cannot be into the Social Determinants of Health until we get to 00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:48.000 addressing and putting get interventions toward structural 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:49.000 determinants of health. Voting 00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:52.000 is arguably one of the most important 00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:55.000 pieces to 00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:57.000 impacting political determinants of health. 00:25:57.000 --> 00:25:58.000 Thinking back 00:25:58.000 --> 00:25:59.000 to the 00:25:59.000 --> 00:26:00.000 example 00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:05.000 , 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:10.000 the life example I gave you related back to mine and it went to funding and 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:14.000 so many other pieces of legislation that can impact immunity health. 00:26:14.000 --> 00:26:18.000 It is such an important factor that helps really impact 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:21.000 what health outcomes are received day-to-day. 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:22.000 You may be wondering 00:26:22.000 --> 00:26:25.000 , 00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:28.000 how big is this issue of unregistered but eligible voters? 00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:32.000 Well the fact and figure we have here is 00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:34.000 it's around 72 million people unregistered 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:37.000 but 00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:41.000 eligible to vote and that's nearly the entire population of France. 00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:44.000 I checked this morning it's a little bit more. 00:26:44.000 --> 00:26:48.000 It goes to show how massive this issue is 00:26:48.000 --> 00:26:52.000 in the United States. 00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:56.000 You also might ask yourself, why are so many unregistered to vote? 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:57.000 Unfortunately 00:26:57.000 --> 00:27:00.000 the main reason people are unregistered about 00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:06.000 is simply because they've never been asked. 00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:12.000 A lot of these people are registering to vote, I'm sure you been prompted at 00:27:12.000 --> 00:27:16.000 your local DMV or another social service agency those are the most 00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:22.000 common ways folks are getting registered to vote. 00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:27.000 Imagine a situation or we bring the opportunity into the healthcare setting. 00:27:27.000 --> 00:27:31.000 We are having much more regular interactions with health professionals 00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:34.000 and we are with our local DMV 00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:36.000 or other social service agencies 00:27:36.000 --> 00:27:39.000 so it's important to think about how we are 00:27:39.000 --> 00:27:42.000 creating this opportunity of asking people to register 00:27:42.000 --> 00:27:44.000 to vote. 00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:47.000 In the spaces where it is not been done before. 00:27:47.000 --> 00:27:50.000 And were looking at the overlap between 00:27:50.000 --> 00:27:52.000 unregistered eligible voters 00:27:52.000 --> 00:27:55.000 and those who are currently disinvestment 00:27:55.000 --> 00:27:58.000 . We can think of voters were young and 00:27:58.000 --> 00:27:59.000 low income 00:27:59.000 --> 00:28:03.000 and communities of color. 00:28:03.000 --> 00:28:07.000 So how 00:28:07.000 --> 00:28:11.000 do we help? So I have had a lot of experience 00:28:11.000 --> 00:28:14.000 helping some of our 00:28:14.000 --> 00:28:17.000 partners, what are their healthcare clinics, healthcare systems, or 00:28:17.000 --> 00:28:19.000 professional associations 00:28:19.000 --> 00:28:24.000 help implement the systems and I'm excited to share more about what those 00:28:24.000 --> 00:28:25.000 resources exactly are. So, 00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:30.000 our tried-and-true resource 00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:33.000 is our badges and lanyards. 00:28:33.000 --> 00:28:39.000 These are great for individuals looking for something on hand 00:28:39.000 --> 00:28:43.000 to register folks.
