April 15 - Session 1

Our Homes, Our Votes: 2024 Kickoff

Diane Yentel, president and CEO of NLIHC, discussed why voting matters for housing justice, and how boosting voter turnout among low-income renters is critical to achieving NLIHC’s mission. Gwen Stembridge, education & partnerships coordinator at Nonprofit VOTE, summarized the latest “Nonprofit Power” report and its evidence on the effectiveness of nonprofit voter outreach, as well as the resources that Nonprofit VOTE makes available to support this work. Dr. Bambie Hayes-Brown, president and CEO of Georgia ACT, highlighted on-the-ground organizing activities across the state and the creative partnerships that enable Georgia ACT to reach voters in all communities. Courtney Cooperman, project manager of Our Homes, Our Votes, reviewed ways to get involved with the campaign beyond the webinar series and previewed the upcoming webinar on Monday, 4/29. The webinar also featured a special message from Representative Nikema Williams (D-GA), lead sponsor of the “Unhoused VOTE Act,” (H.R. 5294/S. 2971) about the bill’s provisions to expand the voting rights of unhoused people and the importance of increasing access to the ballot among historically disenfranchised communities.
